Australian Slang

For this week’s topic, let’s talk about 5 Australian slang words. 

1. Arvo: This word means, Afternoon (下午).
Example: You could say to your friend, "What are you doing this arvo? Let’s go play soccer."

2. Barbie. This word means, Barbeque (BBQ 燒烤).
Example: “The weather’s great today. Let’s go have a Barbie this arvo.”

3. Ta: This word means, Thanks (謝謝).
Example: If a friend helps you with something, you can just say, thanks or ta.

4. Maccas. This word is another name for Mcdonalds (麥當勞).
The name Mcdonalds is too long, so I always say Maccas.
Example: “I’m hungry, do you wanna get Maccas?”

5. Straya: This word means, Australia (澳洲).
Example:
Friend: “Huy, where are you from?”
Huy: “Straya.”
